SIRE is an independent foundation that aims to highlight societal issues, open up the debate about them and put them on the agenda with the Dutch public at large, opinion leaders and decision makers.

During their campaign ‘Breaking the Taboo on Mental Illness’, Wisse has helped SIRE raise awareness among the Dutch population of the stigma and taboos surrounding mental illness, as well as challenge people to think about their response to those around them with similar complaints. Whereas a broken leg usually meets a completely normal reaction, people fail to respond to those with a mental illness, or fail to do so adequately. Such unintentionally clumsy behaviour might lead to social problems like exclusion and stigmatisation.
