Media training

With our personalized media training, we thoroughly prepare directors or managers, MT members and location and communication managers for dealing with the press and for discussions with other stakeholders.

We tailor each training to your needs; it usually consists of both a theoretical part and (role-playing) exercises in which you learn to deal with cameras and difficult interview questions.

We can also provide a half-day training on one specific issue. In that case, we focus the training entirely on that specific subject. The cameraman is also present at this training.

We help our training participants deal with the following questions and challenges:

  • How do I remain in control of the message I want to convey during a crisis situation, not only with the audiovisual media, but also with the written press?
  • How do I deal with (unannounced) interviews or ambush interview situations?
  • How do I avoid falling into the pitfalls of speculative and suggestive questions and reframing?
  • How do journalists and editors think and work, and how can I benefit from the knowledge about them?

Trainers

Media training is a profession best performed by people with experience in front of and behind the camera. Our trainers have that experience.

Serge Beckers and Theo Snijders have both worked as journalists and acted as spokespersons, and also have a large number of (crisis) training courses to their name.

Evert van Wijk, the founder of MediatrainingBenelux, which was acquired by Wisse Kommunikatie in July 2024, has had many Belgian and Dutch politicians, top executives, site managers, communication directors and others in front of the microphone. Together, these trainers can boast more than 60 years of training experience, apart from the expertise of the also highly experienced freelance trainers.

Context

A training does not stand alone. Ideally, it is organized in the context of the organization's risk and issue management, and in the context of its regular PR and communication activities.

Although we are of course also available 24/7 for emergency training,

the decision-makers and spokespersons of an organization are ideally subjected to at least one day with a critical trainer once a year, in order to sharpen the core messages again and to approach the dynamics of a crisis situation again.

In such a situation there is also more time to elaborate on that context and answer questions such as:

  • What are the benefits of an active media policy?
  • How do you bring something to the attention of the media and how certainly not?
  • Can news be created? And if so, how?
  • How do you build and maintain a good relationship with the news media?
  • Press release, press conference, personal interview: what determines your choice?
  • Why is a preliminary interview so important?
  • What agreements can and cannot be made with journalists in advance?
  • Social media: what is the impact of blogs, X, LinkedIn, Facebook and how do you deal with them?
  • When should you use an embargo and when should you definitely not?
  • When do you offer an exclusive interview?
  • Does 'Off the record' even exist?
