Media training

Stay in control of your message

With our personalized media training, we thoroughly prepare directors or managers, MT members, sales managers, location and communication managers - or anyone else who needs it - for dealing with the press or other stakeholders.

Stay in control of your message
We provide our training through our label Mediatraining Benelux. We tailor each training to your needs; it usually consists of both a theoretical part and exercises in front of the camera in which the participant learns to deal with difficult interview questions.

We help our training participants deal with the following questions and challenges:
  • How do I deal with unexpected attention from a journalist?
  • How do I keep control of my message?
  • How do I deal with (unannounced) interviews?
  • How do I avoid falling into the pitfalls of speculative and suggestive questions and reframing?
  • How do journalists and editors think and work, and how can I benefit from the knowledge about them?

Camera is rolling!

Even though most participants will not often have to deal with camera crews, we opt for the format with a camera operator to simulate the dynamics in which it is important to choose the right words immediately and carefully.

Camera is rolling!

Training setup

Our trainers cover both proactive and reactive dealings with media and other target groups.

In the proactive part we discuss, among other things:
  • Context
    • Factual
    • Linguistic
    • Media
    • Setting
    • Framing
  • Target groups
  • Messages

In the reactive training section we will discuss the following components:

  • Crisis communication
  • Worst case spokesmanship
  • Speaking persuasively
    • Content
    • Voice use
    • Body language

Camera interview

The final part of the training, but for many participants actually the beginning of their 'crisis awareness', is the interview in front of the camera.

The participants jointly select one case from a list of 5 to 10 storylines that are tailored to the client. The trainer asks each participant a number of questions about the case, which, depending on the role and experience of the interviewee, are strict and fair or downright confrontational and devious.

The benefit

Every training course is different, every client has their own priorities and pitfalls. And yet, with all our experience, we dare to claim that our training will yield at least some of the following benefits:

  • Insight into poor coordination between colleagues
  • Understanding of the important role of the communications department
  • Points for improvement in terms of (coordination of) core messages
  • The realization that not every good CEO is a good spokesperson
  • The realization that not every official spokesperson is a good spokesperson
  • The realization that you need to match the weight of your spokesperson to the weight of your case
  • The knowledge that journalists (usually) want to record the objective story
  • The realization that PR is the best buffer for critical attention in the event of a crisis.
